Rudolph door hanger

Hi everyone, it's Kathie here.

I've decided to make a Christmas decoration for our front door this year.  When I saw the large Scrapware Rudolph, I knew he would be the perfect subject for it.

I’ve used a combination of the Cosmo Cricket Oh Joy paper and some vintage book paper I tore out of an old book for the project. I used the chipboard as my template to trace the shape of Rudolph's face
onto the paper and then glued it to the chipboard with a glue stick. When dry, I sanded around the edges of the chipboard with some sandpaper to neaten it. I’ve also inked the edges with a distress ink.

His red nose was created using red acrylic paint and then inking around the edges with distressed ink to get a distressed look.

His eyes have been painted too, and then coated with a layer of Dimensional Magic to make them glossy. More book paper gives detail to his ears and tongue.

To make a home for my reindeer I’ve used coordinating papers from the Oh Joy range to create a window frame, snowy hills and some pine trees. 3D mounting tape to gives dimension to some of the elements. Lots of glitter lends a frosty feel.

The entire project is mounted onto a piece of board that has been cut to size. I just drilled holes in the top of the project and fed a piece of decorative ribbon through the holes to act as a hanger.

If you want to protect your project from fading in the light, apply several coats of Mod Podge to seal it. (Although, note that Mod Podge won’t make your project water-resistant so place it in a location where it won’t get rained on.)

He makes such a welcoming door hanger, doesn't he?

NB: This project was originally done for Shop and Crop, who stock a large range of Scrapware Christmas products.

  1. Rudolf is fantastic. Will the modge podge make him weather proof. I live in tropical Nth Qld and the rain sometime blows that way? Although I suppose it would not hurt to have Rudolf as an indoor door display. I love it

  3. Rhonda, the mod podge won't make him waterproof (or humidity proof I suspect). Best ask at your local craft store for a suitable product to seal the project with, if you want it to be totally weatherproof. You may need some Estapol type product.
